crypto virus protection and backup (not replications)

Crypto virus is a ransomware.

The user is the one installing this "virus", thinking it is a mp3 or any other lies internet can find to make you install a program.

This program, wich is not a virus (virus propagate themselves, this is a program that you install on your computer) will encrypt all your files in 2048 bits encryption (nearly impossible to crack). This is a long process.

There is a bad habit done by network administrators these days. They will install a RAID on your server, telling you that your data cannot be lost because the raid will always have a backup copy on another disk.

A RAID does NOT do any backup. It does a replication of your data. If the crypto virus hit your network, the infected files will simply be replicated by your raid.

You have a dropbox or any cloud replication. Your data are safe... NOT! Again, encrypted files will simply be replicated on your dropbox or onedrive.

After a crypto virus infection you still can pay the ransom. You have a good chance to get your data back (i would say 50%). But you just paid a hacker a ransom to get your files back. What will this hacker do with the money? Retirement? Certainly not. He will try to encrypt your files again because you are a paying customer!

So please to all newbie network administrators: a replication is not a backup. A cloud replication is not a backup. A RAID replication or mirror is not a backup.

A backup is a DAILY copy of your data (by date) on a removable support that is removed after the backup. Ideally, it is a tape. Small business can use a blue ray burner. At least once every 3 months.

here is a program that will change windows program execution policie to prevent execution of false "mp3" files that are actually a .exe to install crypto virus:

It is free

Good luck and please backup (copy on removable support) your data regulary. And keep more than one copy. And remove the support after the backup and get it home for safekeeping everyday (in case of fire)

  4. Like i said, a ransomware is not a virus. So mcaffee cannot pretend to stop it, unless it prevent all encryption to work on the computer itself. Example: you could not zip a file with a password (encrypted) if mcafee prevented ransomware with any success.
